Umanutý dobrodruh Fitzcarraldo si usmyslí, že do peruánských pralesů dopraví zázrak evropské kultury - operu. Jeho cesta do nitra neprobádaných končin naráží na bezpočet potíží, k nejpověstnějším patří přesouvání parníku přes horský hřeben. Ve filmu zaznějí slavní operní melodie, z gramofonových desek uslyšíme i hlas Enrika Carusa, jenž téměř zázračně uklidní nepřátelsky naladěné Indiány. Film se natáčel za mimořádně obtížných podmínek tři roky, během nichž musel režisér měnit i herecké obsazení - mimo jiné odstoupili např. Jack Nicholson a Mick Jagger.
