Do parkmontské střední školy přichází nová učitelka LouAnne Johnsonová. Devět let sloužila u vojenského námořnictva, pak se ovšem rozhodla radikálně změnit svůj život. Třída, kde má učit angličtinu, se však zdá horší než jednotka nepřítele na bitevním poli. Problémoví, většinou barevní studenti jsou sice inteligentní, jsou však naprosto nezvladatelní a divocí. První kolo sice LouAnne prohraje, když neunese vulgarity, kterými ji třída při první hodině zahrne, a uteče ze třídy. Rozhodně se však nemíní vzdát. Odhodlána přesvědčit je, že vzdělání není zbytečné a zákony ulice nejsou přednější, pouští se do studia psychologie a přístupem, kterým by se ke svým studentům přiblížila, si pozvolna získává nejprve zvědavou pozornost, a později dokonce zájem studentů. Její nekonvenční metody se však stávají terčem kritiky některých kolegů i komisního černého ředitele Grandeye. Bojující LouAnne tedy musí otevřít druhou frontu...
