Skupina britských školáků ztroskotá po havárii letadla na opuštěném ostrově. Nikdo z dospělých nepřežil a chlapci si tak vybudují svou vlastní mikrospolečnost. Náčelníkem je zvolen Ralph, který se stará o přístřeší a oheň. Jack, vedoucí školního sboru, bere své chlapce na lov potravy (divokých prasat). Mezi Jackem a Ralphem se vyvine hořká rivalita, neboť oba chtějí stanout v čele. Z "Lovců" se pod Jackovým vedením stanou barbarští divoši, zatímco Ralph se snaží držet svou skupinu na civilizované úrovni. Narůstající nenávist mezi nimi vede ke krvavému a děsivému vyvrcholení.
