Wisteria je sirotek žijící v Anglii 19. století. Její dosavadní život byl tragický, kdy otec představený ze sirotčince, kde Wisteria žila, dívenku nutil k žebrání na ulici, a nakonec měl v plánu ji prodat šlechtici, který se vyžívá v týrání dětí. Poslední dny v sirotčinci však nebyly až tak strašné, protože dívka potkala Marbase, mocného démona, který ji každý večer navštěvoval a vyprávěl jí kouzelné příběhy, které během svého nesmrtelného života zažil. Wisteria je jediná, kdo démona vidí, protože již odmalička měla zvláštní dar. Když se dívenka dozvěděla, jaký osud si pro ni otec představený připravil, tak prosila Marbase, aby ji odvedl, ten se však podle zákona démonů nesmí do záležitostí lidí vměšovat, natož je chránit, jedinou výjimkou je situace, kdy člověk uzavře s démonem pakt, během kterého mu daruje to nejcennější, co má, zpravidla duši.
