Småfuskeren Vincent La Guardia Gambini har netop - med nød og næppe - bestået eksamen som advokat. Så da hans fætter William og dennes ven Stanley anholdes for mord og røveri nede i Alabama, rejser Vincent ned for at forsvare dem.
