Cahulawassee floddalen i det nordlige Georgia er et af de sidste naturlige og uberørte områder, som snart vil ændre sig med den forestående opførelse af en dæmning på floden, hvilket igen vil oversvømme meget af den omgivende jord. Fire bymennesker fra Atlanta - Lewis, Ed, Bobby og Drew - beslutter at tage på en kanotur på floden, men det er kun Lewis og Ed, der i forvejen har erfaring med friluftsliv. De støder på et isoleret område, men forstår ikke helt omfanget af det, indtil de ankommer og ser hvad de mener er resultatet af flere generationers indavl. Turen tager en vild drejning da den udvikler sig til at være en kamp for overlevelse..
