Brian Roberts (Michael York) er engelsk sprogstudent. Han ankommer i begyndelsen af 30'erne til Berlin og indlogerer sig på et pensionat, hvor han får Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) som nabo. Sally er sangerinde i "The Kit Kat Klub" – et springbræt til den filmkarriere, hun drømmer om. Stemningen er på én gang hektisk og uvirkelig. I Kit Kat Klub er der fuld tryk på det ubekymrede natteliv. Udenfor kaster det dystre hagekors sine truende skygger ud over hele byen. Sortklædte bøller drager hærgende gennem Berlin. Alle, der ikke bøjer sig for nazisternes magt, er i fare.Men Brian har alt for travlt med at nyde livet sammen med Sally til at bemærke faresignalerne. Og i kabaréten er der ingen problemer, dem lægger man fra sig i garderoben!
