Efter den unge dramatiker David Shayne får finansiering til sit stykke fra gangsteren Nick Valenti, får Nicks kæreste Olive mirakuløst rollen som psykiater – men hun er ikke bare en bimbo, der aldrig kunne gå for at være psykiater – hun er også en frygtelig skuespillerinde.
