Fra vikingernes oplevelser med fluesvampen til de sydamerikanske indianers oplevelse med kokaplanten. Siden tidernes morgen har mennesket eksperimenteret med sind og sjæl, og da den unge fysiolog Dr. Jessop under en rejse til Mexico finder en meskalinholdig svamp, starter han et frygtindgydende forsøg med sig selv. En dag forvandler en af hans forsøg ham til et slags abemenneske, og kun hans kone, antropologen Emily, kan redde ham.
