Den kujonagtige Boris Grushenko bliver tvunget til at melde sig til den russiske hær, da Napoleon med den franske hær i ryggen invaderer Rusland. Højst uventet får Boris succes i hæren, da han tilfangetager en gruppe franske officerer. Det sætter dog ikke en stopper for krigen, og snart har den franske hær indtaget Moskva. Boris ånder lettet op i håbet om, at krigen er overstået, men Boris’ hustru Sonja har planer om at slå Napoleon ihjel.
