Det småt begavede Norville Barnes får et job hos det store firma Hudsucker Industries. Da firmaets præsident begår selvmord, får bestyrelsesformanden Mussberger indsat Barnes som ny præsident for at få firmaets aktier til at falde. Mussberger håber herved hurtigt at kunne overtage firmaet. Imidlertid viser Barnes sig at være en kæmpe succes, og Mussberger får meget svært ved at manipulere den nye præsident.
