Der er krig, og Rawlins-børnene flytter fra London til et sikkert sted langt ude på landet, hos den vrisne Eglantine Price. Det viser sig, at Eglantine er ved at lære trylleri og heksekunster, men hun mangler den sidste trylleformular for at blive udlært. Inden børnene ved af det, kommer de med på jagten efter en mystisk gammel bog, hvor formularen står i. Ved hjælp af en flyvende seng og en hel del tryllekunster oplever de det ene eventyr efter det andet. De besøger blandt andet den tegnede fantasiø Naboombu, hvor dyrene byder dem på en uforglemmelig fodboldkamp!
