Om dagen reparerer Chris Cole kopimaskiner. Om aftenen indtager han scenen som frontfigur i et band, der kopierer Steel Dragon, som er verdens største heavy-metal band. Pludselig får han så sit livs chance. Chris bliver hentet ind som Steel Dragons nye forsanger, og uden videre skifter han status fra at være helt ukendt til at være megastjerne. Og uden videre kastes han og hans kæreste/manager Emily ud i en verden, som er mere sindssyg, end de havde forestillet sig.
