Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) er en mand uden de store sociale eller medmenneskelige evner. Da han en dag fuldstændig uventet dør og derefter mirakuløst reddes tilbage til livet, vågner han op til den irriterende erkendelse, at han kan se spøgelser - og desværre ønsker de alle noget af ham. Især spøgelset Frank (Greg Kinnear) presser på. Han vil have Pincus til at ødelægge det forestående bryllup for Franks enke, Gwen (Téa Leoni). Pincus befinder sig nu midt i en rodet kærlighedstrekant med spirituelle følger.
