En gådefuld, sortklædt revolvermand, El Topo, ridder gennem ørkenen med sin søn. Deres mål er ikke indlysende, og deres skæbne er ikke fastlagt. De gør holdt på deres valfart, da de kommer til en lille by udplyndret af banditter, der har slagtet dens beboere. El Topo beslutter sig for at hævne dem, og endnu mere blod vil flyde. Men det er blot den første i en række brutale hændelser på deres færd.
