John Russel har mistet sin kone og barn i en forfærdelig ulykke, og efter to måneders sorg beslutter han at takke ja til et undervisningsjob i Seattle i håbet om, at en forandring vil få ham til at glemme det frygtelige, der er sket. Han flytter ind i en gammel victoriansk villa med hjælp fra en ung kvinde Claire Norman, der arbejder for den lokalhistoriske forening. Han starter sit nye job på universitetet og får det langsomt bedre. Men det gamle hus skjuler noget.
