THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN fortæller kærlighedshistorien om Elise and Didier. Hun har sin egen tatoveringssalon, han spiller banjo i et bluegrassband. Det er kærlighed ved første blik, trods deres forskelligheder. Han taler, hun lytter. Han er en overbevist ateist, og samtidig en naiv romantiker. Hun har et kors tatoveret i nakken, og begge fødder solidt plantet på jorden. Parrets lykke synes fuldendt da deres lille pige Maybelle bliver født. Ulykkeligvis bliver Maybelle, i en alder af seks år, alvorligt syg. Didier og Elise reagerer på forskellige måder. Men Maybelle giver dem intet valg. Didier og Elise må kæmpe for hende sammen. Kan man komme gennem disse ting, når man er så forskellige? Eller vil kærligheden svigte når man behøver den mest?
