Lizzie (Christina Ricci) er netop begyndt på college. Hun er smart, populær og smuk, og udadtil har hun alt, man kan ønske sig. Men hun lider af ukontrollerbare humørsvingninger og under den følelsesmæssige tumult, de medfører. Anfaldene tiltager og efterhånden afskærer den depressive adfærd Lizzie fra dem, hun holder af. Desuden har Lizzies mange mislykkede terapikonsultationer været en stor økonomisk belast-ning for moderen (Jessica Lange) og gjort mor/datter-forholdet mere anspændt, end det var i forvejen. Da lægen udskriver Lizzie en ny medicin ændrer hendes tilstand sig langsomt i positiv retning, og hun begynder at øjne muligheden for en nogenlunde normal tilværelse.
