Før familien Lutz beboede huset i Amityville, udspillede der sig i selvsamme bygning et andet drama. En katolsk familie flytter ind, og deres ældste søn Sonny bliver kort efter besat af en dæmon, som holder til i et hemmeligt kælderrum. Instrueret af en stemme fra sin Walkman forfører Sonny sin søster, før han går i gang med at slagte den øvrige familie. En lokal præst må forsøge at redde drengens sjæl og samtidig tage kampen op imod den uhyggelige dæmon.
