I en af filmhistoriens bedste musicals bor Adam (Howard Keel) sammen med sine seks yngre brødre i en hytte i Oregons bjergegne. Da han drager til byen for at finde sig en kone, lader kro-servitricen Milly (Jane Powell) sig lokke af Adams smukke løfter og siger ja til hans frieri. For sent opdager hun, at hun er blevet shanghajet til at opvarte syv mandfolk. Adam får en idé til, hvordan hans brødre selv kan skaffe sig en brud, men den er ikke helt stueren.
