The Forbidden Kingdom er den første film, der forener kung-fu mesteren Jackie Chan og Hong Kong action-stjernen Jet Li i samme film. Jason (Michael Angarano) er en amerikansk teenager, som er besat af Hong Kong Film og især gamle kung-fu klassikere. En dag finder han en gammel stav, der har tilhørt den sagnomspundne kinesiske kriger, Monkey King (Jet Li), og pludselig bliver han transporteret tilbage i tiden til det gamle Kina. Her bliver Jason sammen med en flok udstødte kampsports-krigere sendt ud på den farlige mission at befri Monkey King fra den grusomme Jade Warlord.
