Selv om Ellen allerede er forlovet med en politiker, lokker hun alligevel den tiltrækkende Richard til at gifte sig med hende efter få dages bekendtskab. Men Richard finder snart ud af fra Ellens søster og mor, at hendes egoistiske, dominerende kærlighed før har ødelagt andres liv.
