Kompromisløs er kodeordet, når man skal beskrive komikeren Andy Kaufman. Han var en gudsbenådet entertainer, der så let som ingenting gled fra den ene personlighed over i den næste, uanset om det drejede sig om en Elvis-imitation, den østeuropæiske indvandre Latka Gravas (kendt fra tv-serien Taxi) eller hans utiltalende alter ego Tony Clifton. Imidlertid brød Kaufman sig ikke om at blive sat i bås og bare køre videre på sine succeser. Hans ambition var at blive verdens største entertainer. Egentlig var Kaufman forud for sin tid, da hans ironiske distance sikkert ville være gået lige ind i 1990’erne, men så havde han måske ikke vakt så stort påstyr, som han gerne ville. Filmen er et fremragende portræt af en absolut gal, og måske genial, komiker, og Jim Carrey er intet mindre end fantastisk i hovedrollen.
