Historien udspilles i Polen i de tidlige 1960'ere. Ida har mistet begge sine forældre under Anden Verdenskrig og er vokset op i et kloster. Som ung novice er hun klar til at aflægge nonneløftet, men først må hun opsøge sin sidste nulevende slægtning. Hendes seksuelt frigjorte og noget letlevende tante Wanda vender op og ned på Idas liv, og artige hemmeligheder bringes for en dag.
