I det trælse Oakland bor den 16-årige jomfru Nick Twisp, der hidtil ikke har haft det store held hos det modsatte køn. Da den frankofile sylfide Sheeni overraskende råflirter med ham på en ellers ikke særlig lovende campingferie, sværger Nick at krænge sine hæmninger af sig og vinde sin udkårne.
