Quintus er romersk centurion. Sammen med sine mænd er han fanget dybt inde i fjendeland, omringet af det mystiske og næsten uovervindelige stammefolk picterne. Picterne har modstået den effektive romerske krigsmaskine, som ellers har underlagt sig det ene land efter det andet. Men picterne er nådesløse, og her på deres hjemmebane er de en modbydelig og overvældende modstander. Quintus og hans lille deling mænd må kæmpe sig frem vel vidende, at hvert øjeblik kan blive deres sidste.
