I en alder af seks år er amerikanske Bobby Fischer allerede ved at vise sig som et skakgeni. Som teenager er Fischer blevet international stormester, men hans uberegnelige opførsel sender ham på kant med omgivelserne. I 1972 møder han sovjetrusseren Boris Spasskij i "århundredets match".
