Atter en Hitchcock-film, der handler om en uskyldig mand, der bliver anklaget for en forbrydelse, han ikke har begået. Montgomery Clift spiller den katolske præst Michael Logan, som hører en morders skriftemål, men snart selv bliver mistænkt for dennes forbrydelse.
