Den forkælede Ellie Andrewsstikker af fra sin millionærfar, der vil gøre alt for at forhindre hende i at gifte sig med en uduelig playboy. På vej til New York støder Ellie på den arbejdsløse journalist Peter Warne. Da deres bus bryder sammen, drager det brokkende par ud på et vanvittigt eventyr på tommelfinger. Peter håber på at kunne forvandle den fortrolige historie om deres vanvittige rejse til et reporterjob. Men problemerne vokser, da den flygtede arving og journalisten forelsker sig!
