Det semi-biografiske drama 'The Lady in the Van' foregår i en britisk forstad, hvor forfatteren Alan lader den gamle, hjemløse Frøken Shepherd bo midlertidigt i hans indkørsel i en lille gul varevogn.
Den ældre dame ejer ingen sociale kompetencer, lugter værre end en kloak og nægter samtidig at forlade indkørslen. Faktisk ender hun med at bo lige ude foran Alans hus i 15 år, og de to modsætninger knytter med tiden et særligt bånd til hinanden.
