Vi er på pigekostskolen The Bramford School. Det er vinterferie, og kun to piger er tilbage på skolen. Den stille Katherine, hvis forældre af en eller anden grund ikke dukkede op for at hente hende, og den frække og udfarende Rose, der har helt andre planer for sine fridage. De mørke, kolde gange skaber ikke den mest behagelige stemning, og der går ikke lang tid, før begge piger begynder at se og høre mærkelige ting på den tomme, lukkede skole.
