Inspirationen til Decameron er Giovanni Boccaccios (1313-1375) berømte litterære værk, hvor digteren har samlet hundrede folkelige beretninger fyldt med erotik og seksualitet. Af disse har Pier Paolo Pasolini udvalgt et antal historier, hvor han igen er på hjemmebane og satiriserer kirken, mens han giver et billede af mennesket i sin menneskeligste skikkelse. Pasolini har selv en rolle i filmen som den store maler Allievo Di Giotto. Denne kunstner var den første til at male i perspektiv med dybde på samme måde, som det tredimensionelle filmmedies dybde fungerer teknisk. Pasolini spiller med andre ord et historisk kunstnerisk bindeled samtidig med, at hans rollefigur binder filmens skrøner sammen.
