'Det hvide bånd' udspiller sig i landsbyen Eichwald i tiden umiddelbart før Første Verdenskrig. Patriarkatet råder i det lille, protestantiske samfund, hvor majoriteten arbejder som knægte for den lokale lensmand. Præsten styrer menigheden med hård hånd, og ikke mindst børnene opdrages til blind lydighed: Leg og løben omkring tolereres ikke. Filmen starter med at lægen styrter med sin hest – et uheld, som viser sig at være forårsaget af en kraftig snøre spundet ud mellem to træer. Det bliver starten på en række udåder. Efterhånden kaster alle mistænksomme blikke på hinanden, og ordensmagten hidkaldes udenbys fra.
