I sommeren 1900 fødes to drenge i en frugtbar italiensk landbrugsregion. Den ene, Alfredo (Robert De Niro), vokser op i en velhavende familie, og den anden, Olmo (Gérard Depardieu), er søn af en fattig landarbejder. Hele det italienske samfund er i opbrud, og vi befinder os i perioden mellem feudalismens ophør og både fascismens og socialismens fødsel. Selv om de to drenge kommer fra vidt forskellige kår, er de nærmest uadskillelige i drengeårene, hvor de prøver alle grænser af - fra mod til kvinder. Men der kommer også en tid, hvor de bliver nødt til at tage slægternes tunge ansvar på deres skuldre.
