Skybrud, tyfoner, meteorer. Miljøproblemerne er efterhånden blevet så omfattende, at dommedag står for døren. Som straf for menneskenes dårskab ankommer uhyret battra til jorden. Samtidig finder man et gigantisk æg på en indonesisk ø. da ægget udklækkes, åbenbares endnu et monster: Mothra - menneskehedens frelsende engel. Men inden disse to kæmpebæster kan indlede det endelige opgør, hvor verdens forsatte eksistens står på spil, skal de møde den største og farligste modstander af dem alle: Godzilla!
