I 1960 vandt Orfeu Negro som den første film i historien de tre største udmærkelser indenfor filmbranchen (Guldpalmerne i Cannes, en Golden Globe og en Oscar). Også musikken er noget ganske særligt, da den fik folk over hele verden til at danse til den nye stilart Bossa Nova.
Selve handlingen henlægges til Rio de Janeiro, hvor Marcel Camus præsenterer publikum for en opdateret version af myten om Orfeus og Eurydike: Han er livsnyderen, som alle kvinder elsker. Hun er den generte pige fra landet, der efterstræbes på livet. Under karnevallet i Rio flettes deres skæbner sammen - for evigt!
