Øverstbefalende på krigsskibet H.M.S. Defiant, Crawford, kæmper for at bevare disciplinen, stærkt modarbejdet af den sadistiske førstestyrmand Scott-Padget. Da Crawford såres, overtager Scott-Padget kontrollen. Den rasende matros Vizard opfordrer nu besætningen til mytteri, men Crawford får overtalt Vizard til at slutte sig til flåden i kampen mod Frankrig. Da en matros dræber Scott-Padget, må besætningen vælge, om de vil redde deres land eller deres egne liv.
