Addie's mand døde for mange år siden. Det samme gjorde Louis' kone. De er begge i halvfjerdserne og bor i samme kvarter i den lille by i Colorado, USA. De har aldrig haft noget videre med hinanden at gøre, og alligevel stiller Addie en aften hos Louis og spørger, om han kunne tænke sig at de skulle sove sammen. Ikke andet. Bare snakke lidt, og sove ved siden af hinanden. For lige at tage toppen af ensomheden. Så Louis går i bad, og pakker sin pyjamas og sin tandbørste i en papirpose, og går over til Addie.
