Det er 5 måneder efter 2. verdenskrigs afslutning. Rachael Morgan (Kiera Knightley) ankommer til Hamburg for at blive genforenet med sin mand, den britiske officer Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke), der er i gang med at organisere genopbygningen af byen. Parret skal bo i et stort hus, men i stedet for at sparke de tidligere beboere ud - en far og hans datter - giver manden dem lov til at blive på trods af Rachaels protester. Det giver en meget besynderlig hverdag, hvor parret er usikre på, om de bor sammen med venner eller fjender med stigende spændinger til følge.
