En kinesisk mor tager i 1976 sit livs sværeste beslutning, da hendes to syvårige børn fanges i ruinerne fra et jordskælv. Kun én tvilling kan reddes, og moren vælger sønnen. Men den efterladte pige overlever mirakuløst uden morens vidende. Datteren vokser op som adoptivbarn, og først efter Sichuan-skælvet i 2008 konfronteres hun med sin gamle mor, som har måttet leve med sit valg i over 30 år.
