Historien om den legendariske kung-fu-mester Ip Man, fortalt af den stilskabende instruktør Wong Kar-wai. 1930'erne er en guldalder for kampkunsten i Kina. I byen Foshan er der mange forskellige kung-fu-stilarter, og udøverne mødes ofte for at udkæmpe drabelige kampe. Den velhavende familiefar Ip Man mestrer wing tsun-stilen.
