Pierre, i trediverne, er opdrætter af malkekvæg. Hans liv drejer sig om hans gård, hans dyrlægesøster og hans forældre, hvis husdyr han overtog. Da de første tilfælde af et zoonotisk udbrud rapporteres i Frankrig, opdager Pierre, at et af hans dyr er inficeret. Han kan ikke håndtere tanken om at miste hele flokken. De er alt, hvad han har, og han vil gøre hvad som helst for at redde dem.
