I 80'ernes New York gifter ejendomsinvestor-arvingen David Marks (Ryan Gosling) sig med den smukke men fattige Katie (Kirsten Dunst). De flygter fra byen og familien, men bliver lokket tilbage af Davids far (Frank Langella). Tilbage i New York starter Katie på medicinstudierne og skaber sit eget liv, mens David bliver mere og mere voldelig og kontrollerende. Familiens hemmeligheder begynder at dukke op til overfladen, da Katie pludselig forsvinder sporløst. Da hendes veninde mange år senere findes død, tager en politibetjent og en journalist sagen op igen. Med David som hovedmistænkt, baner hans families hemmeligheder vejen for afsløringen af en rystende sandhed.
