1941, syv krigsfanger flygter fra den frygtelige sovjetiske Gulag-lejr. Igennem 11 måneder kæmper de sig over 6.500 km fra Sibirien over den glohede Gobi-ørken i Mongoliet og videre over Himalaya bjergene. De tvinges igennem en udmattende overlevelsekamp mod det barske terræn, sult, tørst, sol og frost. Men de kæmper også en indre kamp for att træffe de vanskelige valg, der udfordrer samvittigheden, når mennesket presses til den yderste grænse og kæmper for sin frihed.
