To midaldrende rock‑dads, Bill og Ted, opdager, at deres manglende "verdens‑sammensmeltende" sang får tiden og realiteten til at gå i opløsning. De bliver hentet af Kelly, datter af deres gamle rejseguide Rufus, og sendt frem i tiden, hvor de får 77 minutter til at redde universet. De rejser gennem tiden for at stjæle sangen fra deres fremtidige selv - men opdager til deres rædsel, at det er deres døtre, Billie og Thea, der i virkeligheden har skabt mestertonen. Sammen med ikoniske musiklegender og hjælp fra kæresten "Death" kæmper de for at samle alle - bogstaveligt talt alle mennesker gennem tid - i et musikalsk crescendo, der redder virkeligheden.
