Historien foregår i fremtiden, hvor Solen udvider sig til en gigantisk rød sag og truer med at udslette alt liv på Jorden. Det får historiens helte til at bygge ti tusinde stjernemotorer, der skal sætte fut på Jorden og flytte den væk fra solen, inden jorden bliver overophedet. I løbet af 2500 år bliver jorden til et rumskib, der forlader sit eget solsystem for at finde en ny stjerne som sol. Jorden kommer ind i Alpha Centauri-systemet, men undervejs dør millioner af mennesker på grund af oversvømmelser, jordskælv og temperaturforandringer. Menneskeheden bliver nødt til at søge under jorden for at kunne overleve rejsen.
