Nicolas Cage indtager hovedrollen i denne horror/sci-fi som familiefaren Nathan Gardner, der sammen med sin kone og tre børn søger mod de rolige omgivelser på landet. Idyllen varer dog ikke længe, da en mystisk meteorit styrter direkte ned i deres forhave og smelter ned i jorden. Pludselig forandres verden omkring dem - mutationer er overalt, og de lokale dyr får bizarre deformiteter. I det nu utrygge og utilregnelige miljø bliver det hurtigt klart for familien, at de må forsøge at bekæmpe den mærkelige, lillafarvede meteorit, der har indvaderet deres hjem. Men hvilken chance har få mennesker mod mystiske og uforklarlige kræfter?
