Paris, 1960. Jean-Louis Joubert lever en rolig, men også småkedelig bourgeoise-tilværelse med sin kone, der nok sværger til selskabslivets lyster, men som ellers sætter en dyd i den perfekte orden indenfor hjemmets fire vægge. Arbejdet på kontoret passes til punkt og prikke, børnene går på kostskole og kommer kun hjem til højtiderne. Men en dag sættes den perfekte ramme over styr, da en flok spanske stuepiger flytter ind på tjenestepigernes sjette sal ovenover ægteparrets herskabslejlighed: Teresa, Carmen, Dolorès, Concepción og hendes kønne unge niece Maria, der netop er ankommet fra Burgos. Jean-Louis er lykkeligt uvidende om, at han snart skal drages ind i stuepigernes verden, og at han står foran en fuldstændig omvæltning af sin trygge og hidtil uforanderlige dagligdag.
