Da den krakilske brøndgraver Pascals kone dør, må han selv opfostre sine seks døtre. Datteren Patricia, der udstråler en elegant skønhed og er uddannet i Paris, er sin fars øjesten. Hun møder piloten Jacques Mazel, som hun bliver gravid med, kort tid før han sendes til fronten for at kæmpe i Første Verdenskrig. Da hun fortæller sin far, hvad der er sket, konfronterer han familien Mazel. Men de bryder sig bestemt ikke om at blive relateret med en landfamilie. Det tager hårdt på den stolte og stædige Pascal, som forviser sin datter og hendes uægte barn. Men måske kan Pascals assistent Felips kærlighed til Patricia få ham på bedre tanker?
