I 30'ernes USA står Ray og Claude uden en mønt på lommen. Derfor virker det som en god idé at smugle illegal spiritus fra Sydstaterne til New York. Men de to tabere bliver fanget, og den lokale sherif har hårdt brug for et par syndebukke for et mord. Ray og Claude får livstid og må nu hustle sig igennem hverdagen blandt fanger og fangevogtere.
